animal fun!
Students had a chance to "Build their Wild Self" today in library! While they are studying animals in their classrooms, we are using library time to learn more about animals and their special adaptations. Students had time to learn more about each animal's adaptions and how they help the animal survive in their natural environment. This fun and informative website is sponsored by New York Zoos and Aquariums and is FREE.
Students were able to print out their wild self and read more about their new creatures special adaptions. Ask your child to see his/her wild self or click on the picture to the left and build your own!

Comparing fiction vs. nonfiction
Finding nonfiction
Finding what you want is an important skill for students to master. Once they have the ability to find the resources that they need for class work or for personal enjoyment, they gain control over their learning and set themselves up to be successful in life. Students will learn about using the online card catalog to search for what they want to learn more about and then students will use their knowledge of call numbers to locate the appropriate resources in the Parkway Library.
Genre - NonFiction
2nd grade students created word clouds for the nonfiction section of our library.

It's all about snow
Martin wants SNOW! While he is waiting for the snow to fall, he tries to create a snowman using other materials. After viewing, we recounted the various antics: shaving cream & lipstick, mashed potatoes, lots and lots of bubble bath and even covering his baby sister with sticky syrup and flour!
Students viewed Martin MacGregor's Snowmany by Lisa Broadie Cook on TumbleBooks.

The students enjoyed Snip, Snip....Snow! by Nancy Poydar. All Sophie wanted was snow! When she the weatherman's prediction of snow does not come true, she convinces her teacher to let the class make snowflakes. Finally, snow comes and so does all the fun that comes with snow: sledding, making snow angels, building snowmen and playing with friends!
After reading this fun book, students put scissors to paper and created some beautiful snowflakes. We hung these wonderful creations up in the library. It's beginning to look a lot like WINTER in the library!

Genre study
Become a GENRE GURU
The 2nd grade students will have an opportunity to try many different genres and earn a chance for a FREE book!
We talked about what a GURU is and everyone shared an example of something that they were a guru of. For example, we had several "gymnastic gurus," 'football gurus," and "reading gurus."
Expectations:
Students will read a "just right" book in the genre and complete a short worksheet for that genre. This lets me know that they read and understood the story. Then, they earn a stamp on their GENRE GURU card. Once a student earns 4-GURU points, he/she will be able to select a book to keep.
Goal: Expose children to a variety of genres so that they can decide which are their favorite. Knowing what they like to read is important for children to understand so that they can find engaging books to read and become life-long learners.

Practice makes perfect! Students had a chance to practice putting books in ABC order. This is a skill that will serve them well. The FICTION section of our library, and most public libraries and bookstores, is organized alphabetically by the first 3-letters of the Author's last name.

book selection --- a "just right" book
In this fun re-telling of "Goldie Locks and the Three Bears," students learned about finding a "just right" book. Goldie Socks met the three li-BEAR-ians and in the process found a book that was just right for her!
Students then had a chance to find a "just right" book and to test it with the 5-finger rule.
