It is that time of year again....the holiday season. And with the holiday season, it is also a time of giving. Reading is a gift for life! Books make great gifts. Learn what interests your child and find great literature that can continue to spark that interest. Visit the Book Fair at Parkway on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 11:00am - 12:30pm. It is hard to believe that we are already half way through November and we have had snow! I grew up in Wisconsin, but will be the first to complain about the snow when I have to shovel it and drive in it and feel the chill of it!
I am happiest when I can curl up on my couch with a steaming cup of coffee and enjoy a new book when the snow is falling! Which reminds me.....I have to stop at the public library on the way home and stock up on books, as we might get more snow! The 2nd and 3rd grade students were introduced to the Parkway Library website and had some time to investigate the site with a partner. Students started with some practice with alphabetical order (GAMES > ABC Order > Mrs. Lodge's Library), carved a pumpkin online, watched a video of the library and explored the rest of the site.
If you haven't had a chance to look around the website with your child, give it a try. Your child can fill in more details about what we are doing each week in library and tell you what genres or kinds of books they are reading. I like to have something to read, where ever I go. You never know when you'll be stuck waiting....
Encourage your child to bring reading material along when you are taking them to practices or appointments or driving them to/from school or just running errands. Show them how important reading is to you by being a good model. We are starting week 6 of library classes already! In each grade we are doing checkout and focusing on specific skills that will help students 'bond' with the library. To keep up to date with what your child is doing in the library, navigate to the SKILLS link and select the appropriate grade from the sub-menu. Grade 3 is focusing on becoming independent library users. We are learning how to effectively use the online card catalog to find the books that we want. For more information, see the 3rd grade SKILLS page.
Grade 2 is exploring genres. We are currently looking at mysteries! Students are learning about the characteristics of the mystery genre, being introduced to many great mystery series in our library and getting to try their hand at being a detective. Check out the 2nd grade SKILLS page. Grade 1 is reading Laura Numeroff books and creating their own "If You Give" class book, using alliteration. Go to the 1st grade SKILLS page to view each class book. Grade K5 has been having fun with ABC books and activities. Our latest activity focused on uppercase and lowercase letters. By coloring their uppercase letters one color and the lowercase another, students discovered a hidden picture! See the K5 page under SKILLS. I am excited to be here in the Glendale-River Hills School District this school year. My name is Mrs. Gallitz and I am the librarian at Parkway Elementary School. I look forward to working with the students and staff at Parkway.
As part of the Allied Arts program, students have library once each week. During their time in the library we will learn about the collection and how to find "just right" books. Typically we will have a read aloud or literacy activity and then students will have time to select books. Ask your child to share their books with you! I will keep the website updated with the activities we do each week. So, check back to see what we are learning! |
